DOUBLE CORK 1080: A CHAT WITH LANE WEAVER

  |   SLUSH STAFF

You've surely seen the clips, Lane Weaver, a.k.a. @doublecork1080 on Instagram has been releasing a daily onslaught of clips, each one more jaw-dropping then the last. We figured it was high time to catch up with him and see how he operates.

How would you describe your snowboarding?

Spontaneous. I kind of just freestyle things mostly, nothing really planned. I just try and do things a little differently and be creative.

I feel like sometimes you can look at a snowboarder and be like, "Oh, I know who your favorite snowboarders are just by the way you ride." but with you, I don't know.  I feel like it could be an open-ended question who you are down with. So, who have you taken inspiration from?

Halldór’s definitely always been the inspiration for sure, really fucked with Halldór. Darcy Sharpe was always an inspo for me, big time, just because he's from where I'm from and I've been around him a lot. Fridge as well, I really fuck with Fridge.

How was it, how was it boarding with Fridge in Norway then? Was that your first time boarding with him?

It was and it was crazy. I was playing it pretty cool, but, it was actually crazy to be riding with him. He’s just as gnarly as I thought he was. Gnarlier than I thought he was, to be honest. You see it on video and stuff, but then when you actually see it, you're like, "What the fuck?"

Is Whistler's your home mountain?

Yeah. I'm from Vancouver Island, so the home mountain was originally Mount Washington. But I’ve been riding Whistler for like six or seven years, since I was 14.

Do you think riding the same mountain for so long, in such a developmental time in your life has contributed to the creativity? Like, do you think over the years you kind of got maxed out of all the normal shit you could do there?

Totally. Well, Whistler also has such crazy terrain. Like, if you go out of the park, it's just a full playground of random features. But the park's super plain, cookie-cutter. We definitely—this season I was like, I've already done everything in the park and I was just trying to hit everything different. Switch it up, find new lines.

Can you explain where the Instagram handle came from?

I was, uh, it was kind of a combination of things, but I saw a guy on Instagram: SingleCork720, just a random dude. So he kind of inspired me, and then it's definitely my favorite trick, for sure. It's just a staple for me, my favorite thing to do on the board. And then I also just kind of thought it was funny.

What’s the staple, back or front?

Back, for sure. Back double cork. I feel like that's a monumental moment in a snowboarder's life, when they land that first back 10. Changes your life, dude. It changes your life.

What's next? Is there another Schmovie?

There's gonna be, yeah. We’re planning to make another movie, so I'm definitely gonna do some street stuff eventually. And then I’m trying to get to the Knuckle Huck, so hopefully X Games. And then we kinda just wanna tour around some parks, go to the States and just keep filming park stuff. Have fun.

You wanna add anything else?

I think more snowboarders should just kinda take it back to almost the old school way where your personality's gotta be a part of your snowboarding, because I feel like a lot of people have the same persona and they're just, like, a snowboarder. But you gotta kinda just be yourself. Have fun with it. Stay creative. Post whatever you want. Be a little more open.
